Limited edition of 50. In 1951 the visionary P.G.Taylor and his crew set out from Sydney in a Consolidated Catalina flying boat Frigate Bird II, to create an Australia Chile air route, the first across the vast southern Pacifc Ocean. An extraordinary episode took place at Easter Island and is graphically shown in this exciting painting. Taylor elected to sail the flying boat out of certain disaster under wild conditions, employing a series of odd manoevres, including sailing backwards, to reach a safe anchorage. (The story is recounted in an information sheet supplied with the reproduction) Today, jet liners fly the route and his famous Frigate Bird II is proudly displayed in the Power House Museum, Sydney. |
