Artist's proofs. This dramatic reconstruction of a little known air battle is set 20,000ft above northern Germany in the summer of 1944, when a group of Mustangs were escorting a daylight raid by Lancasters and Halifax bombers. The bombers were being attacked by rocket-propelled Messerschmitt Me163 Komets when Flt. Lt. Haslope, an Australian flying with 165 Sqdn RAF in a Mustang III, spotted a Komet just below him. The Komet immediately flicked over to dive away vertically, twisting and turning as it went. The painting shows Haslope, determined not to lose his victim, diving headlong behind it, reaching a speed beyond the maximum designed for his Mustang, firing as he went. The astonishing outcome for both aircraft, you can read about in the story supplied with this exciting reconstruction of events. |
